30th November    New Gogo...

Soon on Soi Buakhao

There is another gogo being converted at the corner of Soi Buakhao and Soi LK Metro (Opposite Stereo Bar)

Plenty of work still to do though.

Update: Coyote

4th December 2007

The latest talk is that the bar will actually be a coyote bar. Also owners of Stags Head and U Too have been mentioned as partners

28th November    Bah Humbug...

Bars closed on the run up to Christmas

Bah Humbug Christmas AleThai TV Channel 3 seem to be causing a bit of a stir by reporting that bars will be closed for the 3 days before Christmas. ie from 6pm on 22nd and then all day on 23rd and 24th.

The bars will surely be closed on 22nd and the 23rd but there seems no reason for the bars to be closed on the 24th. (It has been declared a public holiday but that doesn't mean bars have to have a holiday).

Hopefully just Thai TV getting it wrong.

27th November    New on Soi 6...

News in brief

Dirty DensDirty Den's in the middle of Soi 6 has now become Sky Bar.

Meanwhile nearby British Bulldog has had its windows repainted as Billy's Booza.

Lion King towards the Beach Road end of Soi 6 suffered a visit from the fake music police.

Pook Bar have installed dancing polls in the downstairs bar and coyote girls are entertaining there.

26th November    Scaring Away the Customers...

A new Gothic GoGo

Gothic Gogo sign (The E)There is a new gothic themed gogo located in Soi BJ between Nita's Bar and Club BJ. I was told by the girls that it is German owned but sometimes the girls tend to be a little geographically challenged.

I'm not sure if they are targeting customers into the gothic culture or just want to offer something different to Pattaya visitors and expats.

I rather suspect the former as the bar is a little scary for Pattaya gogo regulars. First of all there is no draft beer. Bottled beer is 105 Baht. Secondly lady drinks are set at an outrageous 140 Baht.

But most fundamentally scary of all, is that the dancing girls are ludicrously overdressed in their winged gothic dancing uniform. I am afraid to report that they wear more than coyote dancers. The mamasang looked good in a gothic gown though.

However not all the girls are so attired and the remainder wear standard issue gogo bikinis.

There is a rather tame show where a couple of girls take off their bikinis.

However the girls I spoke to were not at all scary and I had a very pleasant stay. The expensive lady drink at least excuses the girl from dancing duty.

I am sure the bar will work down to some less scary pricing and perhaps even find a more sexy way of combing gothic dress with no dress.

Perhaps they could also do with making the name of the bar a bit clearer. I put it down as Gothic GoGo but perhaps it is named "The E". Not a good name when it comes to deciding where it should go in an alphabetic listing.

There are now 81 girl gogo bars operating around Pattaya.

25th November    Outback Comeback...

The outback at Shagwell Mansions

Outback Bar signTwo or three years ago Outback Bar behind Shagwell Mansions on Soi Arunothai off Central Road was a well known short time bar and Australian restaurant. It vanished for a while but the slightly out of the way bar has now made a comeback.

Initial reports suggest that they are having a tough time recruiting attractive girls but are offering a zero barfine to try and get customers/girls interested.

Guys from Outback were also spotted barfining girls from Soi 6 to try and assist with the staff shortages. Doesn't sound like it worked out, but at least it generated a little publicity to get the bar noticed.

21st November    Discriminatory Entrance Fees...

A bad taste in the mouth at Peppermint

Peppermint Palace in neonIt seems that Peppermint have started charging a 200 Baht entry fee to Asian customers.

Their door staff are now equipped with several signs.

First there is a sign saying 'Full' used to turn away South Asians and Arabs (A common Pattaya policy, said to be based upon safety for the girls and the higher risk of misogynist attitudes from men from those parts).

There is now also a sign indicating a 200 Baht entrance fee. This sign is used for Asian customers or perhaps it is targeted at Japanese visitors.

Farangs are waved in without let or hindrance.

15th November    The Nadir of Climax...

Climax goes A-GoGo

Climax bar signThere rumours of the sale of the Climax Rock Bar seem to have firmed up.

The Climax Rock Bar is currently the features an accomplished resident rock band. It is located beneath Polo (or more accurately, the horribly expensive Galaxy).

The bar has been bought by Germans for a reported sum of about 10 million Baht. The owners are currently mounting a recruitment campaign around other Walking Street bars which unsurprisingly is not well received.

The new bar will be another GoGo and is due to open in December. I wonder of they have also bought the name. It would seem to fit well for a gogo.

14th November    Talking Street...

Rumours from Soi 6

There's a rumour going round Soi 6 that it will become another Walking Street.

There buzz is that it will be closed to traffic each evening from 6pm

11th November    Where is the Fun in Fun City?...

Police close down Walking Street at 2am

Walking Street A story from a week ago that I had missed. Pattaya at Night is reporting that the police closed down Walking Street at just after 2am on Sunday morning 2nd November.

The article concludes: At last here in Pattaya a growing number of Thai citizens seems to be sick of the current unelected military junta and the unnecessary police operations on Pattaya Beach and Walking Street. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Pattaya City itself publicize Pattaya as 'Fun City' - but, where is the fun?

10th November    Catalogue of Errors...

Lollipop A-GoGo opens on Waking Street

Walking StreetThe latest gogo is located in the old VIP club venue directly below Polo.

The bar has been extensively remodelled. The long thin bar now has two sections. The front has a comfortable seats surrounding a central stage. There are also stools but these are the good quality type with backs.

The back section contains the drinks bar and an area for future expansion.

The interior work was clearly only just completed as evidenced by the 'welcome staff' being a workman with his power drill.

Obviously the seemingly rushed opening probably accounted for the scarcity of dancing girls. There were only 6 in the bar. They were dancing 3 at a time on the central stage. It is always to early to judge near the opening, but a couple of the girls were attractive in bikinis.

The draft beer comes in decent sized glasses at 65 Baht and lady drinks are 110 Baht.

The operation of the bar turned out to be a bit of a disaster for me. I got a little annoyed when buying a dancing girl a lady drink. She downed the tequila in one, just as it was her turn to dance, promised to come back and then promptly disappeared to someone else. Then when the bill arrived, it was overcharged at 285 instead of 240.

The American owner seemed to have is heart in the right place and I am sure he will try to get things improved.

There are now 80 bars listed as girl gogos.

7th November    New Broom Sweeps Clean?...

New police big wig in Pattaya

Thai police logoOn 4 November, Police Colonel Sutin’s term of office came to an end in Pattaya and he will now move to Lumpini Station, Bangkok.

Later in the day there was a warm welcome for Police Colonel Nopadol Wongnorm who will be the next Police Superintendent at Pattaya Police Station.

[Ed. It won't take long for the new man to show his hand. Will it be a clampdown or business as usual?]

4th November    Never a Coyote Fan...Until Now

Insomnia Gentlemen's Club opens

Insomnia Gentlemen's Club neonInsomnia Gentlemen's Club is to be found in Soi Diamond in the venue that was previously Super Model A-GoGo

A very impressive first visit. The local builders must have gotten very rich on the number of re-modellings this venue has had this last couple of years.

But the current incarnation is the best so far. It achieves a feeling of luxury as conjured up by the name. In fact so much so that I was a little apprehensive of the prices within the useful VIP Menu on each table. But there is nothing whatsoever to fear. The prices are well reasonable with a cheap draft beer and lady drinks at 95 Baht.

After putting myself at ease with a beer I then surveyed the dancing girls. There are only 2 on stage at one time and they were wearing swirling light dresses rather than the close cropped shorts or minis one usually associates with coyote dancing. And it works, the dancing came across to me as very sexy.

Clearly this enjoyment signalled itself in my body language and one of the dancers quickly popped over a chat at the end of the song. She proved good company indeed. She gave me a guided tour of the bar including the topless dancing upstairs.

There are also other simple innovations that made for a good time. The dancers only dance for a very short stint. It gives them chance to put a lot energy into the dance and it is good for the customers awaiting their speedy return to the chat.

Well done to the Insomnia team, a great start for an innovative new venue.

There are now 79 bars listed in the girl gogo list

4th November    Expensive Beer

Hooty's re-opens under new management

Hootys entranceA new brighter Hooty's re-opened on November 1st 2007. The bar counter has been shifted to the corridor and there is now comfortable bench seating around 3 walls of the bar. This seating is perhaps a little far from the reduced and lowered central stage but there are now small dance stages in amongst the bench seating.

The toilets are a big improvement on the previous versions.

There were lots of girls on duty, both dancers and hostesses wearing attractive patterned dresses. As is usually the case for a new bar, the dancers weren't quite top notch, but there were still a few attractive girls on show. If the bar becomes successful then it will surely attract the cuties.

There were so many girls that it felt a bit lonely to be ignored by the lot of them, not so much as a smile. Nothing a kick from a mamasang couldn't put right though.

The music is clearly important to the bar. It is oldie farang friendly but perhaps a little more pop than other rock music bars. But this seems a good compromise as the music is a little more danceable for the girls.

The big downer on the bar is the price of beer. There is no draft and bottled beer is expensive at 115 Baht. This puts the beer prices in the top ten for gogos yet the bar seems pitched at a level in competition with bars selling beer for about half the price of Hooty's.

The previous incarnation of Hooty's seemed  be in permanent decline due to pitching its prices always higher than the competition. It looks like this policy will persist under the new management.

2nd November    Dry Days

Afternoon bars under threat

A thrumpy Wlecome to Dry ThailandPattaya bars are being told by the local licensing department that there is a new law requiring bars to stay closed in the afternoon up until 18:00.

Bars previously licensed until 2am now get a license from 6pm until 1am

Bars that break the laws are subject to 60 day closure orders.

It is not clear at the moment when the new law will start from, albeit soon, nor whether it will be enforced.
